Additional parts required for a fully functioning system

To use the hub as a complete 2×6 Sachs Orbit system, the bicycle must be equipped with the other control and shifting components.

The following are required for the hub's internal 2-speed gears:

    • Sachs Orbit indicator/shifter chain
    • Sachs 0116 101 001 – Chain guide nut for M10×1
    • Sachs 0570 117 000 – Fixing sleeve with cable clamp
    • Shift cable and housing
    • A suitable left shifter for the Orbit hub's 2-speed function

Sachs' original spare parts list specifically identifies 0187 102 000, 0116 101 001 and 0570 117 000 as the relevant parts for the hub's gear shifting.

The following are also required for the six external gears:

    •  Sachs Commander Type: C 6200 6-speed rear derailleur
    • Right shifter
    • Shift cable and housing
    • Chain 1/2 x 3/32"

For a period-correct Sachs system, Orbit was developed alongside the Sachs-Huret Commander system. Sachs documentation lists, among other things, the Commander C 6200 as a 6-speed rear derailleur and the MA 85.6 E as the left shifter for the Orbit hub.

However, it is possible to build the system with other compatible 6-speed components, as long as the shifter, rear derailleur and sprocket spacing match.
Description

NOS Fichtel & Sachs Orbit 2-speed hub with original 6-speed sprocket block and indicator chain

Rare NOS Sachs Orbit system from Fichtel & Sachs. Orbit was an advanced solution from the 1980s, combining a 2-speed internal planetary gear in the rear hub with a conventional rear derailleur and 6-speed sprocket block.

The result is 12 gear combinations with only one chainring at the front.

Sachs Orbit was developed as an alternative to the traditional double chainring. The internal hub gear provides an extra-low gear range, while the six external gears are handled by a conventional rear derailleur.

How Sachs Orbit works

The hub has two internal gears:

H – High: 1:1 direct drive L – Low: 1:0.74, equivalent to approx. 26% reduction

Shifting between the two internal gears is done using the included indicator/shifter chain. One clever feature of the Orbit system is that the hub gear can be shifted while the bicycle is stationary.

The six external gears are shifted using the rear derailleur:

13 – 15 – 17 – 20 – 24 – 28T

That gives 6 × 2 = 12 gear combinations.

With, for example, a 48T chainring at the front, the hub's Low gear is roughly equivalent to having a 35.5T chainring at the front, providing a significantly lower gear for hills and heavier riding without using a front derailleur.

Original Sachs model and part number

Sachs Orbit type: H 12100 Sachs part number: 60 0100 008 001

H 12100 is Sachs' 12-speed Orbit model, i.e. 2 internal gears combined with 6 external gears. Sachs' historical documentation lists H 12100 as a 2-speed freewheel hub with an aluminum shell, M10×1 axle thread and gearing L = 1:0.74 / H = 1:1.

The Orbit system was introduced around 1981 and was one of the early solutions combining internal hub gears with an external rear derailleur. Sachs' documentation for the system dates back to the early 1980s.

Sprocket block

The included 6-speed Sachs sprocket block:

13–15–17–20–24–28T

This is an original gear configuration that Sachs also listed in its 6-speed range.

Note that the Orbit system's sprocket block should not be confused with a modern Shimano cassette. Orbit uses Sachs' own system, where the sprocket block works with the hub's specific freewheel design.
